Second Half Rally Comes Up Short as Women's Lax Falls to Denver 14-13

April 9, 2006

Box Score

Eugene, Ore. - Stony Brook's furious second half comeback came up short as the Seawolves dropped a 14-13 heartbreaker to Denver on Sunday afternoon at Pape Field. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 5-5 on the season, while the Pioneers improved to 11-2.

The Seawolves struggled early as Denver jumped out to a 7-1 lead midway through the opening half behind three straight goals by Stephanie Greenlees. Greenlees would add back-to-back goals later in the half to stake the Pioneers to an 11-5 lead at the break.

The two teams traded a pair of goals each to open the second half and make it 13-7 before the Seawolves began to chip at the lead. Stony Brook would score four straight times behind goals from Danielle Werner, Jill Gridley, Katie Savino and Amy Taylor to cut the advantage back to 13-11 with 14:25 to play.

Greenlees halted the Seawolves run with her seventh goal of the game with 5:21 remaining and push the lead back to 14-11, but Stony Brook would not go away. Werner struck again with 1:56 to go and Taylor converted on a free position to make it a one-goal game with 14 seconds on the clock.

Amy Hallion pulled down the ensuing draw control, but after a Denver player fouled Taylor, the Seawolves were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

Jen Sandtorv, who came on in relief of Gina DeNezzo (0-2) in the second half, was outstanding, allowing just three goals on 15 shots while making nine saves.

Taylor finished with four goals and two assists, while Kaitlin Leggio added three goals and an assist and Werner and Gridley each scored twice.

Greenlees netted a game-high seven goals while Kristie Leggio tallied a goal and five assists for Denver. Becky Childs turned away seven shots while allowing 13 goals to earn the victory in net.

The Seawolves close out their three-game west coast road trip on Tuesday when they battle Oregon at 7:00 p.m.
