Four Stony Brook Student-Athletes Garner SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award

Marissa Fleury, Dana Hastie, Shaun Krawitz and Jessica Smith all earned SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Awards

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Four Stony Brook University student-athletes have been selected as SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award winners for 2006-07. The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award was created in 2003-04 to recognize students who have combined academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Marissa Fleury, Dana Hastie, Shaun Krawitz and Jessica Smith all garnered this honor for their achievement both on the playing field and in the classroom.

Fleury just concluded her best season in a Seawolf uniform. The sophomore catcher owns a .327 career average in two years at Stony Brook and was named Stony Brook Athlete of the Week earlier this year. She has belted 11 career home runs to go along with 53 RBI as a two-year starter. She has started every game in her career and has set a new career high with 49 hits. Marissa is a member of the America East Honor Roll.

Hastie just wrapped up another successful year with a trip to the NCAA Regionals at the University of Florida. This year she took second place in the 3000m with an ECAC qualifying time of 9:49.73 at the Duke Invitational and finished 12th in the Olympic Development 5000m, with an ECAC qualifying time of 17:09.84. In cross country, Hastie finished 2nd at the ECAC's and placed 23rd at the NCAA Regional. She was named to the All-Academic Team and the All-Conference Team for America East and finished 3rd at the AE Championships. Dana is a member of the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll, Society of Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, and Dean's List.

Krawitz was named to the All-America East Academic Team and placed sixth at the AE Cross Country Championships and 31st in the NCAA Regional this past fall. He led the way for the men's and women's track teams by winning the 3000m steeplechase in an IC4A qualifying time of 9:11.70 at the Southern Connecticut Invite and placed third in the 5000 at the America East Championships. In addition, Krawitz is a Dean's List student, a member of America East All-Academic Team, was named to the America East Honor Roll and is a member of Stony Brook's Society of Distinguished Scholar-Athletes.

Smith, one of the best players in Stony Brook women's basketball history, finished third all-time at Stony Brook in scoring with 1,710 career points and ranks in the top-ten all-time in field goals (2nd), rebounds (3rd), free throws made (3rd), field-goal percentage (3rd) and steals (8th). She was a unanimous selection to the 2006-07 America East First Team and the AE All-Defensive Team. In the classroom, Smith is a member of the Dean's List, Society of Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, America East Commissioner's Honor Roll, America East All Academic Team, and 2006 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Women's Basketball.
