Nine Tennis Players Garner America East Conference Honors
April 27, 2006 Stony Brook, N.Y. - Nine different Stony Brook tennis players earned America East Conference recognition as announced at the conference's annual awards banquet on Thursday night. Youssef Fassi-Fehri was named Men's Rookie of the Year and head coach Gary Glassman was named Men's Coach of the Year. Glassman, in his seventh year at Stony Brook, led the Seawolves to a 12-6 record and has his team the No. 1 seed headed into this weekend's conference championships. Fassi-Fehri, a freshman from Fes, Morocco, was named Rookie of the Year, after posting an 11-4 record, including a 6-1 record at No. 4 singles. The Stony Brook men's tennis teamed claimed all but one of the conference's first-team honors. Tal Meir was named second-team at No. 1 singles, Mike Crooks was named first-team at No. 2 singles, Nihal Advani was named first-team at No. 3 singles, Fassi-Fehri was named first-team at No. 4 singles, Jean-Francois Robitaille was named first-team at No. 5 singles, Dave Kortum garnered first-team honors at No. 6 singles, the duo of Meir and Crooks were named first-team at No. 1 doubles, Advani and Robitialle were named first-team at No. 2 doubles and Kortum and Matt Jacobson were named first-team at No. 3 doubles. On the women's side, the duo of Hana Chovanova and Sandy Wijeratne were named to the America East All-Conference second team at No. 1 doubles.
The Stony Brook men's team enters the America East Championships as the No. 1 seed after posting a perfect 4-0 conference record. The women's team is the No. 4 seed after going 2-2 in America East play. The women's team will take fifth-seeded Albany in the opening round on Friday at Noon. The men's team earned a first-round bye and will take on the winner of the Boston University/Hartford match on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. |
