Swimming And Diving Set Records At America East Championships
Feb. 20, 2002 Orono, Maine - The Stony Brook swimming and diving team set four school records in the first-ever America East Championships for the Seawolves. The men's and women's 400 medley relay each set a new Seawolves record. The women's team of Jessica Claud, Alison Porteus, Michelle Miller and Starlyn Rupinski finished the race in 4:04.32, good for fourth-place. The men's team of Jason Ferrara, Igor Voloshin, Roger Pugh and Ted Freeborn finished in 3:33.45, good for third place. The women's 200 medley relay--Claud, Porteus, Miller and Rupinski--also set a new school record, finishing fifth with a time of 1:53.07. The women's 800 free relay--Rupinski, Miller, Porteus and Sarah Doret--set a new school record with a time of 8:12.23, good for sixth place. The men's team was led by several strong individual and relay performances. The team of Vasiliy Rodin, Ted Freeborn, Dan Berzansky and Roger Pugh won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:26.81. In addition, the 200 medley relay--Ferrara, Voloshin, Rodin and Pugh--was third with a time of 1:37.76. In the men's individual events, Voloshin led the way with a runner-up and third-place finish. He placed second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:11.21 and third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.99. Tim Larkin placed fourth in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.93 and third in the 1650 free with a time of 16:45.04. Ferrara was fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.90. Ted Freeborn swam the 100 free in 47.77, good for third place. Roger Pugh recorded a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 50 free (22.12) and the 100 butterfly (52.86). On the women's side, Porteus led the way in individual performances, placing fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.26. In diving, Kristi Schubert was sixth on the one-meter, scoring 225.95 points, and ninth one the three-meter board with 355.20 points. Peter O'Donoghue was also sixth on the three-meter with 300.55 points, while Andrew Yalcin was seventh with 299.05 points. The men's team finished third behind Boston University and Binghamton. The women's team was sixth, with Northeastern capturing the title for the third straight year. |
