Men's Swimming In Second Place After Day 1 of America East Swimming and Diving Championship

ORONO, Maine - Boston University men and Northeastern University women lead the America East Swimming and Diving Championship after the first day of the three-day event held at Stanley M. Wallace Pool on the University of Maine campus. The Boston University men finished day one with 244 points followed by Stony Brook University (172), University of New Hampshire (169), University of Maine (163), Binghamton University (156), and University of Vermont (90). The Northeastern women totaled 276 points. New Hampshire is second with 209 followed by Boston University (175), Maine is fourth with 140, followed by Binghamton (102), Stony Brook (71) and Vermont (51). The Terrier men finished first in two events on Day 1, the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley. The Terriers captured 67 points in the 500-yard freestyle with 4 swimmers finishing in the top 6. Senior David Rozado placed first with a time of 4:38:68 and freshmen David Brown finished third. In the 200-yard IM, Chris Collins finished first with a time of 1:55:61. Boston University diver, Victor Paguia capped a great day for the Terriers by capturing first place in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 317:70. Maine junior Kris Talarico was second with a score of 229:55. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Stony Brook foursome of Vasily Rodin, Ted Freeborn, Dan Berzansky, and Roger Pugh finished first with a time of 1:26:81. Binghamton senior Brien Van Wagner won the 50-yard freestyle in 21:68. Van Wagner was also involved in the 400-yard medley relay along Tom Volper, Chris McGuire, and Wael Dowidar that placed first with a time of 3:30:36. New Hampshire's relay team placed second with a time of 3:31:62. Northeastern sophomore Emily White won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07:49. Northeastern also got an impressive diving performance by seniors Kate Mailman (488:50), Jen Runkel (434:25), and Ryann Welch (428:60) who finished first, third, and fourth respectively in the 3-meter event. Mailman was named America East Outstanding Diver in 2001. Boston University freshmen Lauren Foster beat a decade old America East record in the 500-yard freestyle with a score of 4:59:89. New Hampshire broke its own America East record of 3:52:31 set in 1998 in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:51:25 led by Michelle Groff, Kristen Zeimetz, Ashley Fish, and Kristen Nardozzi. Maine sophomore Katrine Alcaide won the 50-yard freestyle in 24:12. Teammate Krystal Fogler finished in second with a time of 24:39. Folger and Alcaide also anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay with Griffin O'Conner and Kate Abbott to place first with a time of 1:37:32. Folger has been named the America East Outstanding Swimmer for the last two years. The 2002 America East Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championship continues Saturday, February 16 with Day 2 of competition. |
