Nov. 3, 2004
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Anthony Barberio's goal with 2:58 remaining in the match lifted Stony Brook to a 2-1 victory over Northeastern and clinched the Seawolves' first America East Men's Soccer Tournament berth since they joined America East in 2001. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 11-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play to earn the No. 5 seed in the tournament, where they will face No. 4 seed Vermont in Burlington, Vt., on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. With the match knotted at one goal apiece late in regulation, Dan Salazar sent a cross to Barberio, who lazered a shot past NU goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio to give SB the 2-1 advantage. SB controlled the ball for the remainder of play to earn the victory.
The Seawolves opened scoring at the 21:44 mark of the first half. Barberio sent a cross to a cutting Jose Sura on the left side, who found Chris Scarpati, who one-timed the pass inside the left post from five yards out for a 1-0 SB lead. Northeastern (3-10-3, 2-4-3) tied the match at one goal apiece nine minutes into the second half as Tom Heimreid converted on a direct kick from 20 yards out. John Moschella (8-2-2) turned away five shots to earn the victory in net, while Saccoccio made five stops for NU. Barberio's goal was his third game-winner of the season.
