The Stony Brook University men's lacrosse team hosts America East-foe UMBC on Saturday evening. The Seawolves are coming off a thrilling come from behind victory over Long Island-rival Hofstra, 13-12, on Tuesday evening. The game can be heard on WUSB 90.1 with Matt Mankiewich and Brendan Chamberlain on the call. The game will also be streamed live on goseawolves.org will Michael Solano calling the action.
Last Time Out
Owen Adams found the back of the cage with 1:49 remaining in overtime to lift the Seawolves to a 13-12 come from behind win at Shuart Stadium on Tuesday evening over the No. 20 Hofstra Pride. The Seawolves rallied for three goals down on two separate occasions. Adams fired a shot from 12 yards out into the back of the cage to complete the comeback for the Seawolves with 1:49 left in overtime. The junior midfielder sent the game into extra time as he broke free from his man and buried a shot from seven yards out with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation. The Seawolves, who trailed 12-9 with 8:38 remaining, closed out the game on a 4-0 run. Ryan Hughes added three goals in the win while Brendan Callahan made 17 stops in the cage.
About UMBC
The Retrievers enter Saturday's game with a 8-4 overall record and stand at 3-1 in conference play. UMBC scored a season-high 20 goals and clinched a spot in the America East Conference Tournament with a convincing 20-11 win over Vermont last Saturday. Senior attackmen Drew Westervelt and Andy Gallagher had huge games for the Retrievers as Westervelt tied his career high with nine points on three goals and six assists, while Gallagher set a new career mark with eight points, scoring five goals and adding three helpers.
Westervelt leads the team with 51 points on the year while Jeremy Blevins owns a 10.08 GAA on the year in the cage.
Versus The Retrievers
UMBC leads the all-time series 7-4. In last year's game on April 29, the No. 13 UMBC Retrievers scored 10 goals in the third quarter to break open a close game en route to a 20-9 win over No. 19 Stony Brook in the America East regular season finale.
Bo Tripodi equalled a career high for Stony Brook with five goals on the evening.
Jason Cappadoro finished with four assists.
Last Time at LaValle
12 seniors will play their final home game against UMBC on Saturday. A pregame ceremony will honor seniors Jim Astea, Brendan Callahan, Fil Cavallo, Brendan Mascuch, Luke Romanitch, Adam Lent, Jason Joiner, Tom Izzo, Ryan Maehr, Steve Schroeder, Sean Chamberlain, and Larry Cerasi.
Overtime Owen
Owen Adams netted his second game-winning tally in overtime this season against Hofstra on Tuesday. Adams found the back of the cage four times, including the goal to send the game into an extra frame with 10 seconds left in regulation. His 12-yard blast with 1:49 remaining in overtime completed the Seawolves comeback. Earlier in the season, Adams netted the game-winning goal in overtime against Siena.
Bo Knows Goals
Bo Tripodi recorded a goal and an assist in the overtime victory at Hofstra. The junior attackman currently owns a 25-game point-scoring streak which dates back to Mark 4, 2006. In that stretch, Tripodi has tallied 73 points off 57 goals and 16 assists. The streak is currently the 15th longest in the country. Tripodi currently stands at 39th in the country in goals per game with 1.9.
Against the Ranked
The Seawolves have played four ranked teams so far this season and have gone 2-2. SB's wins came when the Seawolves topped the Denver Pionners and when SB hit the LIE to top rival Hofstra in overtime. Two of Stony Brook's three losses on the year came at the hands of then No. 2 UAlbany and No. 3 Virginia.
One Liners
The Seawolves first attack and first midfield lines have done the majority of the scoring this season for head coach Rick Sowell. The lines have combined to score 82 of the 104 goals (79%) and recorded 129 of the 159 points (81%). The attack line consists of Tripodi, Trenkle, and Chamberlain who have tallied 71 points and 42 goals. Hughes, Cerasi, and Adams have led the midfield with 58 points and 40 goals.
