Men's Lacrosse Travels North For Conference Showdown Against Hartford on Saturday

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's lacrosse team travels across the Long Island Sound to square off against America East foe Hartford on Saturday. The Seawolves, who have won five-straight against the Hawks, are coming off a 10-9 overtime victory over Siena on Tuesday. Currently 6-2, 1-1 in America East play the Seawolves are 3-0 on the road this season and ranked 19th in the latest Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.

Last Time Out
Owen Adams tallied a career-best four goals and found the back of the cage with 1:42 remaining in overtime to lead Stony Brook over Siena, 10-9, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 6-2 while the Saints fall to 6-4.

The Seawolves raced out to a 3-0 lead to start off the game as Adams delivered the first goal of the game for the Seawolves as he scored just 53 seconds in. Bobby Trenkle gave SB a 2-0 lead after he tallied an unassisted goal at the 11:49 mark before Rhys Duch finished a Larry Cerasi feed with 2:46 left in the first quarter. The Saints found themselves right back in the game as a pair of goals from Chris Zarins and Matt Girsh in a 51 second span cut the Seawolves lead to one.

Adams scored his second goal of the game with 4:40 left in the first half to push SB's lead back to two, only to have a Matt Donovan goal with 2:04 remaining cut the Seawolves lead to 4-3 heading into the locker room. Rhys Duch and Adams each scored goals to open up the second stanza to give the Seawolves a three-goal cushion with 5:14 remaining. The Saints' Ryan Duggan responded with a pair of goals and a late tally from Shaun Dunn with just 15 seconds left in the third quarter found the teams knotted at six heading into the final quarter of play. ?A Cerasi unassisted tally just under three minutes into the quarter regained the lead for SB but another Girsh goal 14 seconds later found the teams tied once again. Bo Tripodi stretched his scoring streak to 22 straight games 17 seconds later as classmate Trenkle delivered the feed to give Stony Brook a 8-7 lead with 11:36 remaining. Freshman defender Steve Waldeck extended the Seawolves lead to two as he found the back of the cage for the first time in his career. However, the scrappy Saints once again stormed back as Girsh and Duggan both scored down the stretch, including Duggan's goal to force overtime with 1:32 left in regulation. Adams delivered the game-winner with 1:42 left in overtime as he dodged and ripped a bounce shot to give the Seawolves the 10-9 victory. Duch broke out for a pair of goals while Cerasi and Trenkle both finished the game with a goal and an assist. Brendan Callahan made nine saves in the contest. The Seawolves won just 7 of 23 face-offs in the contest and were daunted by 20 turnovers.
 

 

Against the Hawks
The Seawolves hold a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series and have won the past five meetings between the two schools. The last time the Seawolves lost at Hartford was on March 10, 2001 by a score of 10-9. In last year's meeting at Stony Brook, Jason Cappadoro totaled six points on three goals and three assists to lead No. 19 Stony Brook to a 14-9 win over Hartford. Stony Brook led 3-2 early in the second quarter when Bobby Trenkle's first goal of the season ignited a three-goal spurt to give the home team a 6-2 advantage. The two teams would trade goals for the remainder of the quarter to give SB an 8-4 lead at halftime. The Seawolves seized control of the game early in the third on tallies from Ryan Hughes and Cappadoro to build their lead to 10-4. Rhys Duch scored late in the third to give Stony Brook a 12-7 lead entering the final quarter. Bo Tripodi and Cappadoro scored to open the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 14-7 and the Seawolves held on for the 14-9 triumph. Tripodi finished with three goals while Adam Marksberry added two goals and two assists. Brendan Callahan recorded nine saves to earn his seventh win of the season.

About Hartford
The Hawks enter Saturday's game after 8-7 overtime loss to Quinnipiac on Wednesday. The Hawks were led by Tom Harris who had three goals and one assist while Jason Whitehouse also added two goals. Jon McMahon recorded 13 saves on the day as the Bobcats netted the game-winner 38 ticks into the extra frame. Daniel Clough leads the team with six goals and seven assists while Tom Harris has added seven goals and four assists. Currently 1-10, the Hawks have lost nine in a row and stand 0-3 in America East play.

Owen's Heart
Owen Adams stepped up and delivered for the Seawolves in the 10-9 overtime win against Siena. The junior midfielder, who had totaled four goals combined this season heading into the contest, tallied a career-best four goals, including the game-winner with 1:42 left in OT. For the year, Adams has netted eight goals and added three assists as a member of the first midfield line.

Wally World
Steve Waldeck has led the Seawolves defense in just his freshman year with his physical and athletic play. Waldeck tallied his first career-goal against Siena and dished his first career assist in the loss to Albany last week. He is second on the team in groundballs with 27 and has a team-best 11 caused turnovers on the season.

Riding on 22's
With his late tally in the fourth quarter, Bo Tripdodi extended his point-scoring streak to 22 games. The streak started on March 4, 2006 against Harvard when he started the streak with a pair of goals. During the streak, Tripodi has registered 65 points off 52 goals and 13 assists.
