Men's Lacrosse Edged By Albany 14-13 In Overtime Thriller
May 5, 2006 Baltimore, Md. - Chris Martocchia scored 1:05 into overtime to lift Albany to a 14-13 overtime win over Stony Brook in America East semifinal action Friday night. The Seawolves rallied from a three-goal deficit on three occasions in the second half in what amounted to the third highest scoring game in tournament history. The heartbreaking loss ends Stony Brook's 2006 season with an 8-7 record. Stony Brook trailed 11-8 late in the third quarter before Taylor Eason tallied with two seconds remaining in the stanza to get SB within 11-9 heading into the final quarter. Albany stretched the lead to 12-9 on a Matthew Green goal but Bo Tripodi converted a feed from Jason Cappadoro to cut the lead to 12-10 with 12:05 to play. Tripodi brought the Seawolves within 12-11 on a spectacular goal. He scooped up a loose ball going away from the Albany goal and whipped a backhand shot around his head into the goal with 4:12 to play. Cappadoro drew the Seawolves even 1:25 later on an unassisted marker and the tension grew at UMBC Stadium. After Albany won the face-off and called timeout, John Alpizar beat Eason off the wing and put the Great Danes ahead with 1:51 to play. However, SB would not go away and Ryan Hughes would even the game in dramatic fashion. Coming out of a timeout with 10 seconds to play, Cappadoro lofted a pass to Hughes across the face of the goal. Hughes fired a bounce shot past Brett Queener to tie the game with five seconds to play as the Seawolves bench erupted in celebration. Albany won the overtime face-off and Alpizer fed Martocchia on the left hand side from behind the goal and Martocchia found the top left hand corner for the gamewinner.
Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead early in the game, but Albany scored the next four goals and led 5-2 after one quarter. Trailing 6-2 in the second half, the Seawolves mounted a rally. Marksberry unassisted tally cut the lead to 6-3 at the 2:42 mark of the second quarter. Hughes followed with a rush off the right side one minute later that was finished with a bounce shot past Queener to slice the lead to 6-4. Jim Astea won the ensuing faceoff clean and dashed to the Albany net and fired a shot past Queener to bring the Seawolves within 6-5, SB's third goal in a span of 1:06 The Seawolves controlled the face-off again and set up shop with time ticking down in the first half. Freshman Cory Conway then found Hughes up top and he fired another bounce shot past Queener with 14 seconds to go before the half to knot the game at 6. Hughes finished with a career-high four goals while Tripodi notched three goals and two assists. Cappadoro had two goals and three assists and Marksberry added two goals. Brendan Callahan made 11 saves. Albany advances to face UMBC in the championship game on Sunday. Face-off is at noon. |
