Football Holds Annual Awards Banquet

Stony Brook, N.Y. - On Saturday, March 3, the Stony Brook University football hosted its annual awards banquet at the Student Activities Center on campus. Over 200 alumni, family, and friends joined head coach Chuck Priore and the 2006 Seawolves in celebrating last season. Carl Reuter, the host of the Stony Brook Sports Report and reporter for Fox5 Sports served as the emcee for the event, which also included speeches by Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny and Athletics Director Jim Fiore.

Sophomre defensive lineman Adam Soivilien (Dorchester, Mass./Worchester Academy) received the Workhorse Award as the offensive or defensive lineman who demonstrates the work ethic necessary to develop themselves to the fullest potential at the sports' most physically demanding position. Soivilien was the squad's most productive defensive lineman totaling 30 tackles, with 3 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery. Senior wide receiver Mike Cosentino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) was honored with the Fred Kemp Award which is presented to the upperclassman who is dedicated to excellence on and off the field while leading with pride and intensity. Cosentino finished with 38 receptions for 537 yards, and found the end zone 4 times. Senior linebacker Dan Michitsch (Glendale, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was chosen as the recipient of the Mark Motroni Award which is presented annually to the upperclassman who demonstrates great pride in the Stony brook Football Program and consistently exhibits unselfish dedication to the team. Senior punter Sean McGinty (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) was named the Ray Downey Special Teams MVP as he averaged 36.2 yards per punt on the season while pinning 13 inside the 20-yard line. Two freshmen were honored as Rookies of the Year as Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) was named Offensive Rookie of the Year and Cory Giddings (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) was Defensive Rookie of the Year. Cuttino rushed for a team-best 672 yards, averaging 61 yards per game and ran for three touchdowns. Giddings, the NEC Defensive Rookie of the Year, made 39 tackles, recovered three fumbles, and picked off two passes in his inaugural year as a Seawolf. Junior quarterback Josh Dudash (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River) claimed the Offensive MVP as he came into his own at quarterback as he threw for 2,231 yards, 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions, completing over 62% of his passes. Senior linebacker Chris Tomasky (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Nassau C.C.) was chosen as the Defensive MVP after he registered a team-best 68 tackles.
 

 

Coach Priore also announced Kyle Brown and Josh Dudash as the 2007 team Captains. "The team's selection of Josh and Kyle indicate the direction of Stony Brook Football. Both have paid the price with hard work and dedication and will prove to be great leaders as a result."

The Seawolves open up spring practice on March 26.
