D.J. Munir Named To NIT And Metropolitan Basketball Writers Third Team
April 25, 2002 East Rutherford, N.J. - Stony Brook sophomore guard D.J. Munir (Providence, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) was named to the National Invitation Tournament and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division I Third Team at the 69th annual Collegiate Awards Presentations Wednesday night. The event was held at the Pegasus West Restaurant at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. Munir became the second player in school history, the second in as many years, to be recognized by the NIT and Met Basketball Writers. Stony Brook center Leon Brisport was named to the second team last year. Joining Munir on the third team were Matt Hammond of Fairleigh Dickinson, Darius Lane of Seton Hall, Rahsaan Johnson of Monmouth, Rick Apodaca of Hofstra and Antawn Dobie of LIU. Marcus Hatten of St. John's won the Haggerty Award, given to the top player in the metropolitan area. Munir, a 6-3, 175-pound guard, was the heart of the Stony Brook offense this year averaging 17.2 points and a 4.3 assists per game. In Stony Brook's first season as a member of the America East, he finished second in scoring (17.2), first in assists (4.3) and first in free throw percentage (.869). He scored in double figures in 25 of 28 games and had nine 20-point games to his credit including a 36-point barrage against Sacred Heart, the most points scored in a single game since the move to the Division I level. Munir was one of two Seawolves honored Wednesday evening. Sherry Jordan, a standout on the women's basketball team, was named to the All-Met Women's Division I First Team. She became the first women's player in school history to be honored by the Met Writers. |
