Women's Cross Country

Sophomore cross country runner Clare Schwallie (Corvallis, OR) torched the Baylands Park course Saturday with a time of 18:52. Her time at the Bronco Invitational was the fastest 5k posted by a Gael since school record-holder Allegra Porter ran an 18:46 at the 2003 West Coast Conference Championship.

A multiple letter-winner on the Saint Mary's soccer team, Schwallie jumped onto the cross country scene this season, leading the lady harriers in every race she has competed in. The newcomer has set a personal best every time she has set foot on the trail and has already etched her name in the SMC record books. At the Stanford Invitational, Schwallie ran the eighth fastest 6k time in the history of the program, crossing the line in a time of 24:07.

Schwallie ran her first ever 5k race in a time of 20:40 and then dropped over 20 seconds a week later at the Aztec Invitational with a time of 20:17. She broke the 20-minute barrier with a 19:02 at the Willamette Invitational before eclipsing the 19-minute mark at the Bronco Invite.

Schwallie and the rest of the Gaels will return to the trail on Saturday, October 29 for the West Coast Conference Championships. The first gun will sound at 10 a.m. from Crystal Springs in Belmont.
