Dec. 6, 2007
ST. LOUIS - After helping the Saint Louis volleyball team to its second-straight 20-win campaign, senior middle blocker Sutton Lasater (St. Louis, Mo. / Marquette) and sophomore setter Whitney Roth (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) have received American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northeast Region honorable mention plaudits. With 1,193 kills and 527 blocks, Lasater finished her career as one of just four Billikens in program history to amass more than 1,000 kills and 500 blocks. The Atlantic 10 Conference first-team selection owned the best hitting percentage (.347) on the 2007 Billiken squad in addition to ranking fourth in the league. Lasater's 1.19 blocks per game also ranked fourth in the A-10. The middle blocker completed her career in seventh place on SLU's career kills list and on the block solos chart with 80. Lasater also ranks second in career block assists (447) and third in total blocks. "I couldn't be more happy for Sutton," Saint Louis head coach Anne Kordes said. "She had a harder road than most players but she made tremendous improvements in her game due to her work ethic and the belief she had in herself. Sutton had an amazing senior season, and I'm so proud of her." Roth, SLU's starting setter for the past two seasons, already ranks second on the Billikens' career assist list with 2,972. The 2007 A-10 Setter of the Year led the conference with 13.12 assists per game, and helped the Bills to the best hitting percentage (.255) in program history. As a freshman in 2006, she shattered SLU's single-season assist mark (1,528), and her 2007 total (1,444) ranks second. Roth, who led the Billikens with 11 double-doubles, was also named to the A-10 All-Championship team in 2007 for the second-straight season.
"Whitney had a tremendous year and she definitely put up the numbers in every category to warrant receiving this honor," Kordes said. "This award is a tribute to her hard work and dedication to getting better." Dayton's Jamie-Lee Richards and Erin Schroeder and Xavier's Jill Quayle represented the Atlantic 10 on the All-Region team while the Flyers' Bethany Akerhielm joined Lasater and Roth in receiving honorable mention accolades. |
