Nov. 18, 2007
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After putting together back-to-back standout performances at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship, sophomores Whitney Roth (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) and Sammi McCloud (Columbia, Ill. / Columbia) were each named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team for a second-straight season. The duo, which represented two of the three repeat selections, helped Saint Louis to 23 wins in 2007, the most victories in the Anne Kordes era and the most since the 1999 campaign. McCloud and Roth also helped the 2007 Billikens to the best hitting percentage in school history (.255). Roth, the A-10 Setter of the Year, opened the championship with a match-high 46 assists, six digs and three blocks in SLU's 3-0 win over sixth-seeded George Washington. McCloud, also an A-10 first team pick, tied for match-high honors with 12 kills and five digs. Both players posted double-doubles in the season-ending loss to second-seeded Xavier. McCloud turned in a match-high 21 kills on a career-best 72 swings as well as 14 digs and four blocks. Roth recorded a career-high 17 digs to go with 64 assists. Roth's 1,444 assists in 2007 rank second on SLU's single-season assist list. She now has 2,972 career assists, ranking second on the Billikens' career list. The sophomore is just 312 assists shy of Shelly Metzler's all-time mark of 3,284. Meanwhile, McCloud, the 2006 A-10 Rookie of the Year, led SLU with 4.11 kills per game in matches against A-10 foes and ranked second with 2.91 digs per game. Dayton's Jamie-Lee Richards earned Most Outstanding Player of the Championship accolades while her teammate, Erin Schroeder, was also named to the All-Championship squad in addition to Xavier's Hillary Otte and Jenni Horvath.
The third-seeded Billikens' (23-7) season ended in heart-breaking fashion as they downed Xavier in the first two games before the Musketeers rallied to win the next three to advance to the A-10 Championship title match. XU went on to lose to top-seeded #16 Dayton 3-0 in the title contest. |
