Billikens Score Season High In 88-66 Win Over ECU
Lewis ties career high with 24 points

St. Louis - he Saint Louis University women's basketball team reached a season high in points with an 88-66 triumph over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at Bauman-Eberhardt Center in a Conference USA contest. Angie Lewis tied her career high with 24 points. The Billikens shot 60.0 percent for the game, their highest shooting outing since Nov. 21, 1997. East Carolina jumped out to a 20-12 lead nine minutes into the game before the Billikens roared back. Jana Haywood intercepted a pass for a layup to spark an 18-4 Billiken run. Star Jackson converted a layup and free throw, and Angie Lewis hit two free throws and a short jumper on the baseline. Tali Robich hit a jumper for ECU, but the Billikens' full court pressure forced another Pirate turnover and SLU took a 25-24 lead with 6:36 left in the first half. Christan Shelton scored six consecutive points for the Billikens and a Kirsti Holloway trey, followed by a Shelton layup boosted the Billikens to a 40-30 lead. East Carolina scored the last four points of the half to make it 40-34 at intermission. The Billikens blistered the nets at a 66.7 percent clip in the first half, hitting 14-of-21 shots. The Pirates used a 10-2 run midway through the second half and tied the game 57-57 with 9:36 left. But, Lewis put the Billikens back up on a layup to start a 14-0 outburst. Shelton hit two free throws and Lewis sank another in the lane for a 63-57 lead with 8:07 remaining. After an East Carolina missed free throw, Lewis scored again and Melissa Oliver hit two free throws. Star Jackson stole the ball at midcourt and drove in for a layup. Lewis capped off the run with her fourth basket in the streak as the Billikens took a 71-57 lead with 4:18 remaining in the game. The Billikens sealed the victory with a 9-3 run for an 80-61 lead with just under two minutes left in the game as Brooke Minniear sank four free throws. Lewis hit 9-of-14 from the field and hit all six free throw attempts en route to her 24-point outing. Christan Shelton added 14 points and converted all eight of her attempts from the charity stripe. For ECU, Courtney Willis poured in a career-high 30 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Shanita Sutton chipped in 12 points for the Pirates. The Billikens scored a season-high 88 points and scored the most points in a game since a 96-point outing against Chicago State on Nov. 19, 1999. The Billikens improve to 11-10 on the season, 4-4 in Conference USA. East Carolina falls to 3-17, 1-7 in C-USA play. |
