Billikens Blank Indiana in Spring Opener, 1-0
March 31, 2007 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Jimmy Holmes' (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) tally five minutes into the second half broke a scoreless tie and lifted the visiting Saint Louis Billikens to a 1-0 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in a men's soccer spring match Saturday night at Yeagley Field. Freshman keeper Ross Kaufman and the Billikens backfield fought off 11 IU shots in the shutout effort. "It was a great effort on both sides of the ball," SLU head coach Dan Donigan said. "Jimmy Holmes and Andrew Reeder connected for the game's only goal, and defensively we did what we needed to do. This match was a good opportunity for us to gauge where we stand as we continue our spring season. The result tonight isn't the important thing. What is important is understanding where we need to improve so we can continue to develop." After a scoreless first half, Holmes buried the game winner five minutes into the second half. Reeder served the ball toward Holmes, who instinctively headed the ball into the far side netting for the games only goal. IU, which won the shots battle 11-6, pressed hard late in the match but the Billikens were equal to the task. All four of Kaufman's saves came in the second half, and the Billikens turned aside several late chances by the attacking Hoosiers.
