Villanova Bests Women's Tennis, 5-2
Sept. 21, 2004 PHILADELPHIA - Keyed by wins at the first four singles positions, Villanova (1-0) notched a 5-2 victory over the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team on the Finnesey Courts. Sophomore Alisa Van Meter notched the lone singles victory for the Crimson and Gray and the Hawks also picked up the doubles point. In doubles, SJU registered victories at both #3 and #3 to gain the point. Senior Michelle Savage and sophomore Erika Guers teamed at #2 and posted an 8-5 win over VU's Taryn Cappellinni and Courtney Flezzani. The Hawk tandem of freshman Gina Digiacomo and sophomore Marisa Donelson were also victorious, besting Lindsey Puchyr and Morgan Flezzani, 8-6. In singles, Van Meter needed to go to a super tie-breaker for the third set to determine a winner in the #5 position. She topped Puchyr by a count of 7-6, 2-6, (10-7). DiGiacomo also went to a third set super tie-breaker, but fell to Cappellinni, 5-7, 6-2, (10-8). After three straight home matches to begin the fall season, SJU hits the road for the first of four contests away from Hawk Hill at Long Island on Saturday.
