Saint Joseph's Women's Tennis Tops Saint Peter's; Falls to Stony Brook

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team split its weekend matches versus Saint Peter's and Stony Brook. The Hawks earned a 7-0 win at Saint Peter's on Saturday, but dropped a 5-1 decision to Stony Brook at home on Sunday.

Versus the Peahens Saturday, the Hawks rolled through singles competition, claiming all six matches. Saint Joseph's junior Stephania Velazquez posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vanessa Pangikas at No. 1 singles, while freshman Jennifer Kedzierski downed Angela Wiggs 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Senior Erika Guers posted a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles, while junior Gina DiGiacomo earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Krysta Contino posted the fifth point for the Hawks with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, while senior Marisa Donelson earned a win at No. 6 singles.

In double play, Velazquez and Kedzierski posted an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while DiGiacomo and Donelson earned the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Contino and senior Lauren Kuhmerker rounded out the sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

Sunday versus Stony Brook, the Hawks earned their lone point at No. 1 singles as Velazquez topped Erica Federgreen 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Stony Brook would claim the other five singles points, while the doubles competition was called off.
 

 

Saint Joseph's, which moved to 10-7 on the season with the split, returns to action April 13 when the Hawks host Temple.
