FIELD HOCKEY TEAM EDGES RUTGERS, 3-2
PISCATAWAY, NJ (10/16/02) – Senior Kelly Butler knocked in a pass from junior Kristen Teklinsky with less than six minutes to play in regulation, propelling the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (6-5) to a 3-2 victory over Rutgers (2-12). Butler's goal stunned RU which had rallied with a pair of goals in the final ten minutes to tie the game.
The Hawks opened the scoring with a goal just 4:29 into the match when senior Kathy Sokalski crossed the ball to freshman Katelyn O'Brien. Saint Joseph's increased its lead to 2-0 when senior Natasha Pronga fired the ball past RU goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle for her first career goal.
Rutgers returned from halftime and answered Saint Joseph's goals with two of its own. Junior Leann Grondski put the Scarlet Knights on the board after Kamilah Lalani's penalty corner shot ricocheted off the goalkeeping pads of SJU's Courtney Huff. Less than two minutes later, Lalani tied the score with a direct penalty corner shot.
Gaenzle had nine saves in goal for Rutgers, while Huff made six stops for St. Joe's.
The Hawks resume Atlantic 10 play this weekend when the team hosts Richmond on Saturday afternoon.
