HAWKS DROP HEARTBREAKER TO UMASS, 1-0, IN OVERTIME
AMHERST, MA (10/20/01) The road to the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship goes through UMass and that is where the Saint Joseph's Hawks were on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks gave the Minutewomen, winners of six of the past eight A-10 titles,all they could handle, but it was not enough as UMass prevailed, 1-0, in overtime.
Junior Stacey Blue scored the game-winning goal 40 seconds into the first overtime for UMass. Freshman Heather Kenney intercepted a pass and made her way through several Hawk defenders and into the circle to set up the game-winner. She then passed to Blue,who scored from close range.
Saint Joseph's senior goalkeeper Lauren Bradley was once again brilliant in the nets, facing 14 shots and recording seven saves. UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland posted four saves (eight shots) to record the shutout.
The Minutewomen improve to 7-7 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 conference. The Hawks, 8-5 , 2-1 in A-10 play, will play at Rhode Island on Sunday (noon).
