Hofstra Defeats St. Johns, 3-0, in First Annual Queens-Nassau Volleyball Cup Match
 

 
Jamaica, N.Y.- The St. Johns volleyball team fell to Hofstra tonight, 3-0 , in the inaugural Division I Queens-Nassau Volleyball Cup match played at Alumni Hall. The Red Storms record falls to 14-11 overall and 3-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Flying Dutchwomen improve to 19-4 overall and 9-1 in the CAA.

Hofstra jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning a back and forth battle in game one, 30-27. The Flying Dutchwomen out hit the Red Storm .333-.200 for the game and capitalized on some late game mistakes. St. Johns could not get back on track in games two and three, losing 30-16 and 30-21, respectively. For the match, Hofstra held an advantage in digs (57-28), hitting percentage (.343-.116), blocks (6-3) and kills (51-30).

The Red Storm was led by junior setter Robyn Kurasaki (Mililani, Hawaii) who dished out 26 assists and tallied seven digs. The assists put Kurasaki over the 1,000-assist total for the third consecutive year. Freshman Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) recorded nine kills and two service aces, while senior Sarah McCrary (Walnut, Calif.) added seven kills.

Hofstra was led by Stephanie Rewitz who recorded a game-high 20 kills on 31 attempts for .548 hitting percentage. Brie Katz dished out 30 assists, while Moran Manuelita recorded 20 digs.

Hofstra will retain the Division I Queens-Nassau Volleyball Cup for one year until they put it back on the line when St. Johns travels to play them next season.

St. Johns returns to action on Friday, October 25 when they host BIG EAST rival Georgetown. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
