New Haven, Conn. The St. Johns University mens track & field team took third place and the women tied for fourth at the Southern Connecticut State University Invitational this weekend in New Haven, Conn. The men earned 85 points, finishing behind UMass with 113. The women tied with UMass with 82 points.
The jumpers and throwers continued to lead the womens team. Nicola Coffey (Meath, Ireland) (52.70m) and Sheba George (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (52.10m) finished first and second, respectively, in hammer throw, both earning BIG EAST and ECAC championship berths. In the shot put, George and Coffey placed second and third, respectively, with 13.58m and 11.98m marks. Alina Abramova (Armavik, Russia) won the triple jump event with an 11.08m mark, qualifying her for the BIG EAST championships. Abramova also managed a second place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.35m. In the high jump, Renee Castelo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed third with a 1.63m jump, bettering her previous performance of 1.60m. Castelo has now qualified for the BIG EAST championship in both the high jump and the javelin. For the men, Dietrech Washington (Nashua, N.H.) placed second in the high jump (2.08m), third in the pole vault (3.66m) and 12th in the javelin (39.60m). Washingtons mark in the high jump qualified him for both the BIG EAST and IC4A championships. Terrance Buckley (Shoreham, N.Y.) took second place in the shot put (14.42m) and third in the discus (42.78). Buckleys mark in the discus meets the qualifying standard for the BIG EAST championship, while his mark in the shot put is .01 short of the qualifying standard (14.43m). Jason Goulart (Providence, R.I.) and Ed Hausdorf (Bellerose, N.Y.) finished first and second, respectively in the hammer throw. Goularts 56.70m qualified him for both the BIG EAST and the IC4A championships. Hausdorf qualified for the BIG EAST with a 51.42 mark.
The Red Storm returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when they host the SJU Track & Field Classic at DaSilva Field on the campus of St. Johns University.
