Storrs, Conn. -- Led by the strong arm of freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.), the St. Johns softball team earned a doubleheader split with Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies scored a single run in the bottom of the 11th inning of the opener for a 1-0 win, but Allman held UConn to one hit in the second game, as the Red Storm won the nightcap, 5-0.

In the second game, both teams were held in check until the seventh inning, when St. Johns erupted for five runs. Junior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) hit a one-out double and scored on a double to right from classmate Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio), giving SJU a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) reached on a fielders choice and advanced to second, allowing Shepherd to score on an error with the Red Storms second run. A ground out moved Sandoval to third and she scored on a single to right-center from freshman Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.). Senior Ann Raab (Freehold, N.J.) followed with a single up the middle, sending Connecticut starter Claire Benson to the showers. Senior Kelly Houghton (Millboro, Del.) followed with a double to right-center, scoring both runs and giving St. Johns a 5-0 lead.

Allman walked the leadoff batter in the seventh, but retired the side in order after that as she improved to 13-18. She went the distance, allowing only one hit, walking three and striking out three. The Huskies lone hit was a leadoff infield single in the bottom of the second inning.

In the opener, Suzy deBary, who reached on a fielders choice, moved to third on a two-out double from pitcher Barb Cook, and scored on an error on the same play, giving the Huskies a 1-0 win.

Allman pitched 10.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits, walking one and striking out 15 batters.

St. Johns improved to 13-21 overall and 3-5 in the BIG EAST with the win in the nightcap. The Red Storm play next on Saturday at Providence, and travel to play at Boston College on Sunday.
