Nov. 7, 2003 St. John's University women's soccer senior Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) were named to the 2003 All-BIG EAST Second Team by the conference's 14 head coaches. The awards were presented at the conference's annual women's soccer championship banquet in Somerset, N.J. on Thursday evening. The 2003 BIG EAST Championship continues with semifinal and championship action this weekend in Piscataway, N.J. Rett, a defender, earns the first BIG EAST Postseason award of her career in her final season with the Red Storm, after proving herself to be one of the top defenders in the league over the last four seasons. She started all 19 games for St. John's this year, leading the Red Storm defense to five shutout wins, including a 1-0 defeat of #20 Boston College on October 12. Rett tallied the Red Storm's final goal of the season, knocking in the team's lone goal in their 2-1 quarterfinal loss at West Virginia. Last season's BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, Schmidt earns a spot on the conference's Second Team for the second-straight season. She led St. John's with 21 points on the season, scoring five goals and finished second in the BIG EAST with 11 assists. She was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America District I First Team.
The Red Storm finished the 2003 season with a 2-1 BIG EAST Quarterfinal match loss at West Virginia on November 2.
