October 5, 2001, Jamaica, NY -- In a matinee contest this afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field, St. John's outdueled Providence for a big 2-1 victory to even the Red Storm's record at 2-2 in the BIG EAST Conference.

Seniors Marissa Stork (Flushing, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Lisa Kaczmarski (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) scored goals to propel St. John's to a 2-0 advantage late into the second half but the momentum would turn near the end of the game.

Providence freshman Veronica Bakke suffered what was believed to be a broken collarbone after a collision with Red Storm defender Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) with 18:38 left in the contest, causing the game to be delayed nearly 30 minutes. Bakke was taken by ambulance to a local Queens hospital for further tests.

When play resumed, Providence answered with a late goal from BriAnne Bruni at 79:22 to cut the Red Storm deficit to 2-1. But, St. John's junior goalie Tina Fogg (Warwick, RI/Warwick Veterans Memorial) would stem the tide with key saves down the stretch for her third win of the season to hold off the Friars in an important inter-league contest.

St. John's outshot the Friars (4-4-1, 0-3-1) by a count of 9-4 and had seven corner kicks to PC's two.

Stork's goal came on a nifty move from 15 yards out to score past Providence goalkeeper Caroline Haines at 19:38 of the first half for a 1-0 lead.

The score stayed that way until the second half when Kaczmarski converted on a tip-in from just outside the goal line on a great feed from Joanna Dawson (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) at 52:25 of the second half.

The win gave the Red Storm two victories in the BIG EAST and sets up a key matchup with conference foe No. 19 ranked Syracuse this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at DaSilva Memorial Field.
