September 28, 2001, Jamaica, NY St. Johns senior Lisa Rinaldi is back! Her return was nothing like the fanfare given to new Washington Wizards guard Michael Jordan but her first goal of the season gave the Red Storm all the scoring they needed to hold off BIG EAST rival Boston College 1-0 Friday night at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Rinaldis goal came off a nifty pass from senior midfielder Kristy Bergen (Massapequa, New York/Massapequa) at 26:05 of the first half on a direct kick from 20 yards out.
The native of Montreal, Canada (Laurier McDonald H.S.) has been back in the lineup for two straight games after a foot injury sidelined her for most of the preseason and the first five St. Johns regular season games this year. But she made her presence felt, leading SJU with two shots while finding the net to stop a team streak of 10 straight halfs without a goal.
The Red Storm (2-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) had lost four straight and had been shutout four games in a row. Their last goal came on September 2 of this year. Junior goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, Rhode Island/Warwick Veterans Memorial) notched her second shutout of the season stopping six shots to protect the win for St. Johns.
The Eagles (1-4-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) best scoring chance came at 48:31 of the second half when Fogg turned back a blast by B.C.s Katherine Halloran with an acrobatic save deflecting the shot wide left.
Other strong performances by St. Johns included Bergen who had the lone assist and two shots on the night, as well as shots by Lisa Kaczmarski (Lancaster, New York/Clarence) and Dominica Reina (Frankfort, New York/Notre Dame) who totaled one each.
Boston Colleges Elyse Meredith, starting her first game of the season, had four saves as the Eagles out shot SJU 14-6 on the night. The Eagles were led by Meghan Moore who amassed three shots in defeat.
