JAMAICA, N.Y. – The 2003 Empire State Games concluded on Sunday with the championship rounds being held. Several members of the St. John’s athletic community participated in these Games, including former and current student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
Kim MacMillian (Toms River, N.J.) and Dana Petersen (Staten Island, N.Y.) of the St. John’s women’s basketball team participated in the Games for the New York City team that went 1-2 in the round robin format, then lost in the bronze medal game to Adirondack. MacMillian, after scoring only nine total points in the two losses, scored a team-high 19 points in the team’s 89-85 win over Central, pushing them into the bronze medal game. Peterson totaled 17 points in the three round robin games, including a high of eight against Central.
In women’s soccer, Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) led the Adirondack team to the gold medal, after defeating Hudson Valley 4-0 in the championship game. Henderson scored three goals in the three round robin games, including a two-goal game in the team’s 4-2 win over Long Island. Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.) led the Central team, equaling Henderson’s total of three goals, but her team lost to Hudson Valley in the last round robin game, bouncing them into the bronze medal game. Also competing in the Games, were Pristina Alford (Tacoma, Wash.), Laura Burlacu (Flushing, N.Y.) and Erin Zambelli (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) for New York City, and Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) representing Long Island.
The Red Storm volleyball team was represented by head coach Joanne Persico-Smith along with current student-athletes Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) and Yana Ruban (Kiev, Ukraine) and former student-athlete Olga Roudovski on the New York City team that was coached by St. John’s assistant coach Mario Treibitch. The New York City team went 4-1 in the round robin format earning the No. 1 seed. In the medal round, they defeated Long Island and Central, but lost to Western twice, taking home the silver medal.
Rick Cole, St. John’s Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, competed for the Long Island team in men’s volleyball. However, the team went 1-4 in the round robin format and lost to New York City in the medal round.
