Jan. 10, 2008

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's soccer players Jaime Beran and Julianna Cohen have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-East Region teams. This marks the first time in school history that a St. John's player has received this academic distinction from the NSCAA.

"Julianna and Jaime thoroughly deserve this honor," head coach Ian Stone said. "Both individuals truly exemplify the term `student-athlete.' They also both serve as excellent examples to the younger players in the program on the field, in the classroom, and in the community."

Cohen was named to the second team for maintaining a 3.92 grade point average while majoring in secondary education. The senior defender helped a St. John's a defensive unit post eight shutouts and a 0.85 goals against average. She played in all 19 games, getting the starting nod in 17 and tallied eight shots on the season.

Beran earned the honorable mention distinction for recording a 3.55 GPA in government and politics. The goalkeeper posted three shutouts and combined on four other shutouts. She only allowed six goals in 17 games played for a 0.50 goals against average. She made five or more saves on four occasions and led the team with an .854 save percentage.

The 2007 St. John's women's soccer team concluded its 2007 season setting program records with six BIG EAST wins and eight home victories. In addition, the team's 11 wins on the year is tied for the third-most in St. John's history. One of the Red Storm's biggest wins of the year was a 1-0 victory over then-No. 18 UConn. The win against the Huskies was the first for the Red Storm since 1994.
