QUEENS, N.Y. - Freshman forward Maria DeMatteo headed home Courtney Lane's corner kick in the 28th minute to give St. John's a 1-0 victory over DePaul Friday night at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm remained undefeated at Belson Stadium (6-0-0), and improved to 8-1-2 (3-1-0 BIG EAST) on the year. For DeMatteo, it was her first career goal. Jaime Beran and Rebecca Capinera combined for the Red Storm's fifth shutout of the season and each recorded a save. Beran, who started the game, got the victory for St. John's and improved her record to 3-1-2. In the first-ever women's soccer meeting between the two teams, it was an evenly matched first half with St. John's recording five shots to DePaul's three. The difference was DeMatteo's header midway through the half, as the 5-9 rookie was able to win Lane's corner kick and head it home. Lane, a free kick specialist, tallied her second assist of the year. The Blue Demons finished with five shots and had two corner kicks, compared to St. John's nine shots and four corner kicks. DePaul goalkeeper Kelsey Hoinkes had three saves in defeat. St. John's will put its undefeated home record to the test Sunday, when No. 20 Notre Dame visits Belson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live over the internet at RedStormSports.com. GAME NOTES: St. John's improved to 6-0-0 at home for the first time in school history and is one home win away from tying the single-season school record ... St. John's head coach Ian Stone notched his 125th career victory ... DeMatteo became the ninth Red Storm player to score a goal this season.
