2005 WNIT Bracket
March 14, 2005 Queens, NY - The St. John's University women's basketball team has been selected to participate in the 2005 Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Red Storm, who posted a 19-10 overall record this season, will face Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion Delaware in the first round on Thursday, March 17. St. John's will play past the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in 17 years when they travel to Delaware. The last postseason appearance for St. John's came after the team won the 1988 BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. St. John's won its NCAA first round game over Fairfield, but fell in the second round to Virginia that year. After posting a 7-9 conference record this year, the Red Storm earned the No. 8 seed in the 2005 BIG EAST Championship. St. John's topped No. 9 Seton Hall 45-42 in the first round before falling to the No. 9 team in the nation and the tournament' s No. 1 seed, Rutgers, in the quarterfinals. St. John's sophomore duo of Kia Wright and Angela Clark have led the young Red Storm team, which has already won more games than the last two seasons combined. Wright, a rookie who was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, is averaging a team-best 14.7 points and 3.8 assists per game, while Clark is the Red Storm's top rebounder for the second-straight season, pulling down 8.4 per game. Delaware, who posted a 16-2 record in the Colonial Athletic Association, enters the game with a 25-5 overall record. This season marks their fifth 20-plus win season in the last six years and the Hens are returning to the WNIT for the third time in the last four years. In their last outing, the Hens fell in overtime to Old Dominion, 78-74, in the CAA Championship game on March 12. Tiara Malcom, the Hens leading scorer on the season, chipped in 19 points in the loss. Tiffany Young, who is averaging 11.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, led Delaware with 23 points and nine rebounds. Delaware leads the all-time series between the two schools, 2-0. Their last meeting was on December 8, 2003. The Blue Hens won that game 59-44 at Carnesecca Arena.
