CUNNINGHAM, SUTTON-BROWN POWER RUTGERS TO 77-43 VICTORY OVER RED STORM WOMEN

PISCATAWAY, NJ Davalyn Cunningham and Tammy Sutton-Brown combined for 32 points to lead the #14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights to a 77-43 BIG EAST victory over the St. Johns University Red Storm Tuesday evening at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

The Red Storm, who have now dropped seven straight, fall to 5-12 overall and 0-6 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers improves to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the league.

The shooting woes continued for the Red Storm, who are averaging just 49.3 points per game in conference action. Rutgers bolted to a 17-5 lead midway through the first half and St. Johns could not recover. The Scarlet Knights hit 53.4 per cent of their field goals for the game and outrebounded SJU 43-26.

One bright spot for the Red Storm was junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.), who kept her double figure scoring streak intact with a team-high 13 points. She has now led the Red Storm in scoring in nine of the last 10 games. Senior Latasha Thompson (Newark, N.J.) also scored in double digits with 10 points to go along with four assists.

Still in search of their first BIG EAST victory, the Red Storm return home to Alumni Hall this Saturday, January 27, to host Pittsburgh at 2:00. St. Johns is 23-12 all-time versus the Panthers, including a pair of victories last season, one of which earned the Red Storm a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2000 BIG EAST tournament.
