Stony Brook, N.Y. -- The St. Johns mens tennis team is on a winning streak. The Red Storm won their fifth match in row, defeating Stony Brook, 4-3 this afternoon at the SB Sports Complex. St. Johns record now stands at 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
The doubles matches proved to be crucial for the Red Storm. At No. 1 doubles Erik Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Jake Maxwell (Glen Cove, N.Y.) continued to be dominate, winning over Larsen and Williams of Stony Brook, 8-5. Cameron Lore (Toronto, Canada) and Christian Carere (Brampton, Canada) played the No. 2 doubles spot for the first time this season. Lore and Carere cruised to an 8-1 victory over Anonsen and Amrieault. Their doubles record improves to 2-1. Fabian Carchi (Corona, N.Y.) and Brian Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.) teamed up for the first time this year at the No. 3 position. Carchi and B. Scharf had no difficulty, putting away Hewitt and Drozdzick, 8-1. Heading into singles action, the Red Storm led 1-0. At the No. 1 slot, Larsen of Stony Brook was forced to retired in the second set, giving E. Scharf his 11th dual match victory of the season, 5-0, default. At the No, 2, 4 and 5 positions the St. Johns tennis team was unable to secure victories. Carchi fell to Anonsen, 6-7, 4-6 at the second spot. Carere was beat 3-6, 3-6 by Amrieault. In a hard-fought battle, Lore, playing No. 4 singles, lost a heartbreaker in a tiebreaker. Lore captured the first set 6-3, but dropped the second set 4-6. In the tiebreaker, Hewitt of Stony Brook emerged with a 8-10 win over Lore. Stony Brook now led 3-2. B. Scharf coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No.3 position over Williams. The score was tied at 3-all. The deciding match would be in the hands of No. 6 players, Nikhil Teppara (Mississauga, Canada) and Drozdzick. Teppara downed Drozdzick, 7-6, 6-1. Teppara, who had not won a match all season, captured the win for St. Johns.
The Red Storm takes on BIG EAST rival, Rutgers at the National Tennis Center tomorrow at 2:30 pm. The BIG EAST will only invite the top six teams in the league to the conference championships in late April. Every BIG EAST match is crucial to the Red Storms chance at the BIG EAST championship.
