Storrs, Conn. - The St. Johns University mens and womens tennis teams traveled to Connecticut on Tuesday to take on the Huskies of UConn. The men were successful in their attempt to defeat the Huskies, 4-2, while the women dropped to UConn, 0-7.The men received stellar individual performances from sophomore
Rick Ferreira (Fort Beaufort, South Africa/Northern Iowa), senior
Fabian Carchi (Corona, N.Y./Cardozo H.S.) and
junior Jake Maxwell (Glen Cove, N.Y./P.D. Scheiber) as each was able to defeat their opponents. At No. 1 singles, Ferreira, kicked off the Red Storm victory defeating Mike Furman 6-1, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Carchi defeated UConns Max Zubatsky 7-6 and 6-4, while at No. 3 singles Maxwell beat Andy Swentt, 6-4, 4-1.The match between St. Johns
Boris Chiporukah (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) at singles No.4 and UConns Joe Lang was not completed due to darkness.In doubles action, the combination of Ferreira and freshman
Todd Goldberg (Pomona N.Y./Ramapo Senior H.S), was strong enough to take home victory against the Huskies, 8-5. Also gaining a victory for the men were Maxwell and Chiporouka who defeated their opponents, 8-6.
On the womens side, St. Johns suffered a tough road loss, losing each of their matches to the Huskies. Sophomore
Nataliya Kostova (Bulgaria/Bethune) was on the verge of pulling out a comeback victory, but lost to UConns Trinell Russell in a third set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
In doubles action, Kostova and teammate Tessa Lewis (Nova Scotia, Canada/St. Patricks) played tough throughout the match, but in the end dropped to Russel and Natalie Tirapelli of UConn, 8-6.
The mens team will look to continue their winning streak as they head down to Washington D.C. for a match against the Hoyas of Georgetown, while the womens team will head up to Albany on Friday to take on the Great Danes. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
