South Orange, NJ ' The St. John's baseball team was looking for a sweep of the Seton Hall Pirates. Instead, they dropped all three, 8-0, 6-4 and 8-3, failing to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1995, and for the first time under head coach Ed Blankmeyer.
The Red Storm was held to just three hits in the 8-0 shutout in the first game of Saturday's twin bill. Kevin McGerry (Philadelphia, PA/Fr. Judge) allowed seven runs on eight hits, striking out four in three innings. The Red Storm threatened twice in the game to no avail. They failed to score with runners at second and third with one out in the fourth. They had two runners aboard in the seventh, failing to drive them in.In the nightcap, St. John's failed to hold on to a one-run lead into the sixth inning before falling, 6-4. After falling behind, 2-0, in the top of the third, the Red Storm rallied for three runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead of the Pirates. Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond HS) led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Chris Fallon (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne HS). Pete Graham (Horseheads, NY/Wall HS) followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw. With runners at second and third and no out, Mike Niksa (Malverne, NY/Kellenberg Memorial HS) grounded out to first, scoring Fallon. Graham scored on a RBI single by Jason Kane (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford HS). Seton Hall tied the score in the sixth and added three more in the eighth to take a 6-3 lead. In the top of the ninth, Graham led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Niksa. Eric Potts (Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park HS) pinch hit for Kane, singling in Graham. With the tying run on first, Jonathan Kahn (Taunton MA/Taunton HS) and Asa Grunenwald (State College, PA/State College Area HS) struck out and Potts was caught stealing.The Red Storm stranded 12 runners in the third game on Sunday, eight of which in scoring position. Seton Hall opened up scoring in the second, getting off to a 2-0 lead. The Red Storm scored once in the first, when Fallon scored on a double by Niksa, and Shane Zarzycki (New Hyde Park, NY/Chaminade HS) scored when Kane doubled in the fourth. The Pirates took a 4-2 lead into the ninth inning before touching relief pitcher Anthony Sutter (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville HS) for four runs and batting around in the inning. The Red Storm would attempt a short rally in the ninth when Kane scored on a sacrifice fly by Graham, but fell short, 8-3.
