JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University freshman pitcher Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Co-Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today by league officials. Varvaro shared the award with West Virginia sophomore Shawn Miller.
Varvaro, who attended Curtis High School in Staten Island, threw a complete game shutout in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Boston College, leading the Red Storm to a 13-0 win over the Eagles. The freshman hurler kept the Eagles bats in check throughout the nine-inning game. BC put runners on base with singles in each of the first three innings, but the right-hander was able to escape without a run. He retired the side in order in the fourth, and the Eagles loaded the bases in the fifth after a single and a pair of walks, but Varvaro induced a ground out to end the inning. It was his first complete game, and only the second this season for St. Johns. He allowed five hits all singles walked four batters and struck out seven in the win. Varvaro improved to 4-5 and lowered his earned run average to 4.52. He has 53 strikeouts in 61.2 innings pitched, including 37 in 41.2 innings of work in league games. In his last two starts, Varvaro has thrown 15.1 innings (including a no-decision at Virginia Tech last week), giving up six runs, three earned, on 12 hits with 13 strikeouts for a 1.78 earned run average. St. Johns (27-25, 11-12 BIG EAST) closes out the home portion of its schedule on Thursday, hosting New York Tech. First pitch on Senior Night is slated for 7 p.m.
