The Red Storm men’s and women’s fencing teams will host Rutgers and Sacred Heart in their annual St. John’s Invitational. The action inside the strip is set to start at 11 a.m. The men’s team will look to continue its dominance and add two more victories to its 12-2 record while the women’s team is on mark to surpass its 2006 win total as it sits at 12-3. Dagmara Wozniak, the internationally ranked No. 1 Junior women’s sabre fencer, will anchor the women’s team along with captain Monika Golebiewski. Golebiewski leads both the men’s and women’s squads with 40 wins on the season and fences the foil. Wozniak has collected 39 wins, good for the second most wins on either team. Epee fencers Joanna Guy and Tanya Novakovska are also part of the 30-win club along with Katia Larchanka who competes with the foil. Olya Ovtchinnikova and Reka Szele have 24 wins a piece and will look to bolster their records before Northeast Regional Championships on March 11. The men’s team has had a number of standout performances this season as six members have at least 20 wins under their belts. Sabre fencer Luther Clement and foil fencer Henry Kennard lead the men with 32 wins and five losses. Co-captain Sam Wunderlich has a career-high 31 wins so far this season and is not the only one breaking records as sophomore Stan Vaksman has a personal best 30 wins with only three losses. With Northeast Regionals just around the corner, the St. John’s Invitational is of great importance to many of the fencers that hope to quality for the event. For all three teams, this will be the last event of the regular season. For more information on the Red Storm fencing team and all of St. John’s athletics, please visit www.RedStormSports.com.
