Spartans edge out Bonnies

ST.BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - After rallying in the last half of Thursday evening's meet, the women's swimming and diving team dropped a close 130-112 decision to Michigan State at the Reilly Center pool. The Bona women came out strong in front of a home crowd, winning the meet's first event. Freshman Kathryne Valentine, senior Anneli Johnson, junior Allison Whalen and senior Meghan King grabbed first place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.02. Whalen, King, Valentine, Johnson and sophomore Kara Small picked up one win each on the evening. Whalen surged past Michigan State's swimmers with a first-place time of 58.34 in the 100-yard butterfly, and in the 100-yard backstroke, Valentine touched at 1:00.06 to win gold. Johnson, who is undefeated in breaststroke events this year, continued her streak by finishing first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.96. While King and Small took first in their respective races, their teammates followed closely behind. King took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.06, while sophomore Allison Smith posted a time of 54.34, good enough for second. In the 500-yard freestyle, Small placed first in 5:13.39 and senior Taryn Ahern took second place with a time of 5:16.53. Smith and Ahern also swam hard in the 1000-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, respectively. Smith captured second place in her event with a time of 10:41.02, and Ahern managed to grab silver with a time of 1:58.03. In diving action, sophomore Gina Hendrickson placed fourth in the three-meter dive by recording a score of 195.38, her best point total in the event this season.
With the loss, the Bonnies drop to 2-4 on the season. The Brown and White will complete a two-game home stand when they take on A-10 opponent LaSalle on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 12:00 p.m. |
