Women's soccer falls at Saint Joseph's
Oct. 27, 2006
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Lead by senior Ali Wean's first career hat trick, Saint Joseph's kept its Atlantic 10 tournament hopes alive with a 4-1 win over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team on Friday night under the lights of Finnesey Field. The Bonnies opened the game in style in the 7th minute as junior Jessica Bartock notched her first goal of the season to give the Brown and White the early lead. The play began in the midfield as junior Kelly Gregory gained control of the ball and found teammate Kerry O'Malley in the middle of field. O'Malley then played the ball down the right side of the field to Bartock, who hit the upper right corner of the net for the goal. It didn't take long for the Hawks to respond as they tied the game in the 17th minute when Wean notched her first goal of the game. Wean's direct kick glanced off a Bonaventure defender and passed senior keeper Lisa Eberhart. Just over 11 minutes later, Saint Joseph's took its first lead of the game, 2-1, as this time it was Wean finding teammate Shannon Osborn for the score at the 27:23 mark. The Hawks took the one-goal advantage into the break after outshooting the Bonnies 12-4. Momentum stayed with Saint Joseph's in the second half as its defense was able to hold the Bonnies to just two shots over the final 45 minutes to help pull away for the 4-1 win. Stout defense resulted in a pair of Wean goals just five minutes apart in the 76th and 81st minute as she made good on a penalty kick and another direct kick. Eberhart finished with eight stops in net as she made her 37th consecutive start. The loss drops the Bonnies to 2-14-1 and 1-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's is now 4-4 in league action.
St. Bonaventure will closeout its season on Sunday as it ends its two-game Philly road trip at Temple. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. |
