Bonnies pitch shutout at Saint Francis (Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. - The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team posted its third shutout of the season and in the mean time surpassed its win total from all of last season as it defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Stokes Soccer Complex. The Bonnies improve to 3-2-1 on the season, while the loss is the second in a row for the Red Flash (3-3). "It was important for us to come out and play well today after Friday's tough loss," said head coach Manoj Khettry. "Everyone played exceptionally hard today and as a team we showed signs of improvement in several areas." The Brown and White broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute as sophomore Leah Oleski continued her offensive outburst by picking up the assist on freshman Marilyn Wargo's eventual game-winning goal. Oleski has scored a point in each of the last three contests and has six points in three games, while Wargo now has two of St. Bonaventure's game-winners this season. St. Bonaventure continued to apply pressure on the on the offensive end and eventually found the St. Francis net for a second time in the 73rd minute as the freshmen one-two punch of Anna Cunningham and Courtney Bosse provided an insurance goal. Bosse found Cunningham in front of the Red Flash net to make it 2-0. Despite being outshot 13-10, the Bonnies put nine of their shots on goal in comparison to six by St. Francis. Freshman keeper Nicole Markert made five second half saves and was credited with the win. Freshman Amanda Prestigiacomo played the opening 45 minutes, making her sixth consecutive start.
St. Bonaventure will now travel to Canisius on Friday, September 21 for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Griffs. |
