Saint Joseph's tops Bonnies, 64-51
Jan. 16, 2005 ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Turnovers and poor shooting plagued St. Bonaventure in a 64-51 loss to Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies shot 37 percent and committed 20 turnovers in the loss. Saint Joseph's Whitney Ffrench's traditional three-point play capped a 12-3 second half run, giving Saint Joseph's a 41-32 lead with 10:02 remaining. The Bonnies crawled back, mounting a 6-2 run over the next 3:28 to cut the lead to 43-38. Senior forward Tory Vyborny capped the run with a layin at the 6:26 mark. It was not enough, however, as the Hawks continued to hit key baskets and deny the Bonnies on the offensive end. A three from freshman guard Mandi Pierce to bring the Bonnies within six, 57-51, with 1:50 remaining, but the Bonnies would come no closer. "We knew they woubl come in here and play hard," said Bona head coach Jim Crowley. "I think as a young team we tensed up in some situations, and they certainly took advantage of that." After both teams struggled to find the iron in the opening minutes of the contest, a free throw from Saint Joseph's Ayahna Cornish tied the game at 12 at the 10:07 mark. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the half, and the Hawks entered the locker room with a 29-25 advantage. The Bonnies' defense held Saint Joseph's to 35 percent (21-60) from the floor, including 33 percent (6-18) from three-point range.
Sophomore forward Audrey Latendresse and junior guard Stefanie Collins led the Bonnies with 14 points apiece. Latendresse and senior guard Caitlin Crist ripped down a team-high eight rebounds. Both teams grabbed 42 rebounds.
The Hawks put four players in double-figures, led by Ffrench and forward Maura McBryan with 12 each. The loss dropped the Bonnies to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Saint Joseph's improved to 4-13 overall and 2-3 in conference action. The Bonnies return to action on Thursday, Jan. 20 at Rhode Island for 7:00 match-up with the Rams. |
