Sept. 24, 2007
OLEAN, N.Y. - Despite a slow start to the tournament, the St. Bonaventure golf team rallied to win its third straight Leo Keenan Invitational title on Monday at Bartlett Country Club. The Bonnies fired a team score of 283, the lowest overall team performance for the entire tournament, to make up a nine-stroke deficit and claim their 13th overall title. "We said that we'd have to put forth an extraordinary effort after yesterday, and this was as close to extraordinary as we're going to get," head Coach Steve Campbell said. "I saw a collective group that reached back for something extra today and had a tremendous time. I couldn't be prouder, especially for our seniors." Sophomore Nathan Peck fired a 2-under par round of 68 to lead the team. Peck finished in second place for overall medalist, finishing both rounds at 2-over par (142). "It was a maturation day for Nate," Campbell said. "He's had a solid career for us to this point and he showed a tremendous amount of poise and patience." Junior Brennan Payne was 2-under par on the back-nine to finish with a 71. After starting the first six holes of the tournament at 8-over par, Payne played the final 30 holes at three-under to finish with a two-day score of 145. Freshman Chris Stoddard and senior Andy Whalen both carded a 72, while senior Ryan Swanson rounded out the scoring for the Brown and White with a 74. Rider's Tyler Brewington finished as the overall medalist for the second time in the past three years, fashioning a 71 today for an overall score of 140. The Broncos, who entered the day in first place, finished in fifth.
Senior Alex Bianco shot a 75 to lead the Bona Brown team, which placed 12th. Freshman Chris Allan (75) and senior Norm Strotman (76) also had solid rounds for St. Bonaventure. Strotman's two day score of 148 tied him for 19th overall individually, while Allan finished tied for 25th with a 149. The Bonnies will return to action this Saturday at 8 a.m. in the Cornell University Invitational at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. |
