JACKSON STATE ADVANCES TO PLAY SOUTHERN

Itta Bena, MS - The Jackson State University Lady Tigers defeated the Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers 9-2 in first round action of the 2006 Southwestern Athletic Conference softball tournament. Jackson now faces the Southern University Lady Jaguars who received a bye in the first round for winning the Western Division.

Southern is 2-1 on the year versus Jackson State. They first faced each other during the Southeastern Louisiana softball tournament where SU claimed the first victory 10-3. Their second contest was in the friendly confines of Lady Tiger den but that didn't deter the Blue and Gold as they managed to squeak out a 4-3 victory in Jackson, Mississippi. The final match for these two second round opponents, was held "on the bluff." Southern took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and looked as though they were going to take the final game but the Lady Tigers came roaring back in the top of the fourth inning and scored four runs. Jackson then scored another run in fifth to while SU added one in the bottom of the inning but couldn't produce any more and dropped the final match to 4-5.

The quarter-final contest will be played at 12:30 p.m. on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University.
