ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Senior Indi Johnson scored 15 points for the Southern University women's basketball team as the Jaguars beat Norfolk State University at the Comcast Lobo Shootout consolation game, 70-57. The Blue and Gold got to the consolation game by losing to Towson University 57-50. Southern (1-5) went into the locker room at half with a 30-27 lead. SU then pulled away late in the second half with a 9-0 run to push the score to 53-44 at 8:47. The Jaguars hit their free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach and pick up their first win of the season. Johnson went 6 of 12 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free throw line while red shirt freshman, Freda Allen, recorded a double-double with 16 total rebounds and 13 total points. In the first game of the two day tournament, junior Deidra Jackson recorded 15 points in her first action of the season. Jackson led all scores while sophomore Ashley Augerson contributed with eight points. Lake Providence, Louisiana native Freda Allen double double vs. Norfolk State has not happened for a Jaguar since Krystal Huggins did it vs. the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on February 10, 2007.
The win breaks a 17 game losing streak for SU and moves head coach Sandy Pugh three games closer to winning her 200th career victory.
Southern will continue their road swing when they travel Mobile, AL to take on the University of South Alabama on Thursday, December 13th. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. |
