SOUTHERN MEN'S BASKETBALL SET TO OPEN 2007-08 SEASON

Nov. 2, 2007

The Southern University men's basketball team will officially open the 2007-08 hoops season on Saturday, November 3rd when the Jags host Tougaloo College in an exhibition game.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm, in the FG Clark Activity Center on the SU campus. The game is free and open to the public.

Southern is coming off of a 10-21 season, the most losses in school history.

The Jaguars return four starters and three lettermen to this season squad, including Chris Davis, the second the leading scorer from last season.

Davis averaged 10.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season. Joining Davis in returning is guard Steffon Wiley (7.6 ppg, 1.8 rpg) along with forward Douglas Scott (5.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg). Also returning is guard Geri Guillory (5.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and center Joe Jack (4.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg).

"I like our team. I like the makeup, and I think we can go three deep at every position," Spivery said. "That's what I was thinking about after the scrimmage the other day. Now we just have to, at this point, get a certain rotation down. Over the next three to four weeks, that's what we're going to be looking at. The lineup is probably going to change here and there until we get settled on something."

After the exhibition game Saturday, Southern will open the regular-season starting with a two-day Classic Tournament Nov. 10-11 at Southern Methodist University. The Jags will play SMU at 7:35 pm on November 10th, and will play Paul Quinn at 2:00 pm on November 11th.
