Prairie View's Wrandel Taylor pitched a complete game,
striking out eight, as the SWAC West leading Panthers of Prairie View A&M
took game one of the doubleheader, 5-2.
Left fielder, Darren Clark (1-for-3), and third baseman, Michael Gavion (1-for-2), each had an RBI for Southern. Johnny Giles went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Calvin Lester went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the PVAMU Panthers. Roydrick Merritt (2-1) went 5.2 innings before handing over a 3-2 lead to Emary Frederick. Frederick did his job, by producing two ground balls, but the error bug came back to bite the Jags, as shortstop Brandon Revis had two throwing errors that allowed PVAM to keep the inning alive and score three runs in the top of the sixth inning to expand their lead to 5-2. In game #2, SU's Joshua Kirk pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout, as the Southern Jaguars bounced back to earn a series split on the day. Second baseman, Gene Filyaw, Jr., was the hitting star in game two, going 3-for-3 including a game-sealing three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder, Gerard Gause went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly RBI, and DH Darren Clark had a sacrifice fly RBI as well. The two teams with hook-up on Sunday at 1:00 pm, at Lee-Hines
Baseball Field, in the rubber game of the series. |
