Southern Miss Volleyball Team Loses To Tulane

Morgan Johnson led Southern Miss with 11 kills

COLLEGE STATION, TexasSouthern Miss remained winless in Conference USA, losing to Tulane, 3-0, on Friday at the G. Rollie White Coliseum on the campus of Texas A&M University.

After taking game one 30-21, the Green Wave had to come from behind to claim a 30-28 game-two victory before cruising to a 30-24 match-deciding game three. With the win, Tulane's first C-USA victory of the season and first since moving to College Station after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the New Orleans area.  Tulane improve to 2-7 on the year and 1-5 in league play, while Southern Miss falls to 6-11 overall and 0-8 in C-USA action.

Morgan Johnson led Southern Miss with 11 kills while Amber Bloom, Jassmien Stephens and Ashley Petrinec had six each. Stevi Cherri paced the Golden Eagles with nine digs.

Sara Radosevic was the lone Green Wave player to finish in double-digit kills, but junior right-side hitter Sara Thorson had nine, rookie middle blocker Lauren Boatwright had eight and freshman outside hitter Bridget Wells had seven. Senior libero Kelli Dickson led all players with 16 digs.

The Green Wave blew open a close game one, turning an 11-all tie into a seven-point lead courtesy of a 9-2 run midway through the stanza. Tulane pushed for points the rest of the way and cruised to a nine-point victory.

The momentum of the game-one win did not hold up as Southern Miss jumped out to 17-11 lead. Tulane refused to back down, however, and began chipping away at the Golden Eagle advantage. The Green Wave cut the lead to a pair at 22-20, and Southern Miss appeared to have the game in hand at 25-20. Tulane outscored the Eagles 10-3 the rest of the way and went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

Game three was all Tulane as the Green Wave took and early 9-4 lead and never looked back. Southern Miss rallied to cut the lead to three midway through the stanza, but Tulane held on for the win.

Southern Miss continues its road swing, traveling to UTEP for a 1 p.m. match.
