HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss dropped its fifth-straight match, 3-1 (30-32, 30-28, 23-30, 22-30), to Tulane on Friday night in Conference USA action. Southern Miss falls to 13-15 overall and 5-8 in the C-USA, while Tulane improved to 12-10 and 8-5. Freshman Angela Hlavaty led Southern Miss with 18 kills, followed by Mari Ruddick and Amanda Huntoon with 11 kills apiece. Huntoon also had nine total blocks. Maia Ivanova led the Eagles with nine digs. Sara Radosevic led Tulane with a match-high 29 kills with Ksenija Vlaskovic with 13 kills, Jen Linder and Bridget Wells had 12 kills each. Jenn Miller led Tulane with 17 digs and Luna Rebrovic added 11. Southern Miss popped out to an early 4-1 lead in game one, before Tulane used a 9-3 run, taking a 10-7 lead. The game remained close through out with neither team having more than a one-point advantage. The game had 15 ties and five lead changes, but Tulane was able to take game one, 32-30. Tulane took the early lead in game two, 10-4, before Southern Miss used a 14-7 run to take an 18-17 lead. Tulane regained the lead following a kill by Radosevic and two blocks. Tulane held a 28-27 lead when Southern Miss closed out the match, scoring three straight points for the 30-28 win.
Southern Miss led early in game three, but Tulane fought back to take the lead, 7-6. With Southern Miss leading, 11-10, Tulane then scored four straight points to take a 14-11 lead. The Green Wave pushed its lead to 23-14, before Southern Miss used a 6-2 run to get within five points, 25-20. Tulane ended game three with a 5-3 run for a 30-23 win. The Golden Eagles led 7-3, when Tulane scored six-straight points, taking a 9-7 lead. Southern Miss climbed back into the game, tying the game at 11-11, before Tulane scored four consecutive points for a 15-11 lead. Both teams continued to battle, but Tulane was able to hold off a late rally by the Golden Eagles to take game four, 30-22. Southern Miss remains at home when the Lady Eagles host UTEP in a 1 p.m., match on Sunday. |
