BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- - The Southern Miss volleyball team could not hold on to a 2-0 lead, dropping its second-straight match with a 3-2 loss to UAB by a score of 30-21, 30-24, 27-30, 13-30, 11-15. Morgan Johnson led the Southern Miss (10-12, 1-5) with a match-high 20 kills with Stevi Cherry adding 16 kills. Five Golden Eagles recorded double-digit digs, led by Maia Ivanova with 16, Kristen Metz, Ashley Petrinec and Amy Flarity had 11 digs each, while Angela Hlavaty added 10 digs. Fernanda Domingos and Ivana Bozic led the way for UAB (13-6, 4-2) with 15 kills apiece and Casey Dent added 12. Brianna Galvin recorded a match-high 17 digs and Bozic added 14 digs. Game one featured 10 ties and three lead changes. With the score tied 17-17, Southern Miss used a 9-1 run to take a 26-18 led. The Golden Eagles closed out game one on a 4-3 run, 30-21. After trailing 3-0 in game two, Southern Miss then outscored nine straight points for a 9-3 lead. The Eagles continued to build on their lead, before UAB got within three points, 20-17. Southern Miss then ran off five-straight points for a 25-17 lead. UAB held off three game points before the game ended on a service error by the Blazers, giving the Golden Eagles a 30-24 win and a two-game advantage. Both teams battled in game three. There were 10 ties and four lead changes. UAB broke open an 18-18 tie using a 6-2 run. The Blazers went on to win 30-27.
Game four was all UAB as the Blazers took a 23-3 lead by winning 16 straight points. Nevena Stefanov served 15 of those points in which she landed four aces in the 30-13 win. UAB carried its momentum into the fifth and final game, taking a 5-1 before the Golden Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to take 7-5 lead. From there, both teams battled to an 11-11 tie, before UAB scored the last four points for the 15-11 win. Southern Miss returns home to host SMU and Tulsa in a weekend series, Oct. 12 and Oct. 14. |
