HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Freshman Angela Hlavaty and junior Morgan combined for 23 totals blocks, but it wasn't enough to defeat UNO on Wednesday night at the Payne Center. Southern Miss lost to UNO, 3-1, dropping to 7-8 while UNO improved to 11-3. Hlavaty recorded her first career double-double with 11 kills and 11 blocks. Ashley Petrinec and Amanda Huntoon added seven kills apiece, while Johnson finished the match with a career-high 12 blocks. Amanda Blunck and Cassie Lavery had 17 digs each and Maia Ivanova added 15. UNO had four players record double-digit kills led by Hillary Carr with 20 followed by Dobrila Kovacevic with 18, Lindsey Boler had 14 and Jessica Helgeson added 11. Jayne Duncan recorded a match-high 29 digs. Kovacevic also added 17 digs. "Our main team problem is playing with consistency," Head Coach Ricci Luyties said. "We've shown that we can play good at times, but we also play bad at times. Our consistency isn't there and becomes a snow-ball effect with everybody. Overall, they never quit which is a good thing, but we just have to get more consistent."
UNO jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one only to see the Lady Eagles outscored UNO 9-1, taking a 9-6 lead. For there, both teams battled back-and-forth recording nine ties. Southern Miss' led by two, 22-20, when UNO scored three consecutive points to take a 25-22 lead. Southern Miss would tie the game once more at 27-27 before UNO scored the last three points for a 30-27 win. UNO scored the first three points of game two before eventually taking a 5-1 lead. Southern Miss got back into the match behind the serving of Amy Flarity who served four straight points, helping Southern Miss take a 9-7 lead. UNO fought back to regain the lead, 10-9. Southern Miss then went on an 11-3 run for a 20-13 lead. UNO made a run but Southern Miss held off the Privateers for a 30-24 win. Game three was all UNO, jumping to 5-0 lead. After Southern Miss scored its first point on a block by Johnson and Hlavaty, UNO then scored the next six points for a commanding, 11-1 lead. UNO finished the game with an attack percentage of .441 while Southern Miss hit -.057 in the 30-8 loss. Southern Miss took the early lead in game four, 3-1, but it was short lived when UNO outscored Southern Miss 4-0. Southern Miss regained its lead and led by as many as three points on three occasions with the last coming at 15-12. UNO went on a 4-1 run to tie the game at 16-16, before the Lady Eagles used a 5-1 run to take their largest lead of the game at 21-17. UNO then scored six straight points behind Kylee Bauer serving to take the lead for good at 23-21. UNO closed out the game on a 7-3 run for a 30-25 win. Southern Miss returns to action on Friday, hosting Conference USA foe Tulsa at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center. |
