GULFPORT, Miss. -- - GULFPORT, Miss. - The Troy Trojans claimed the Third Annual Lady Eagle Classic title, defeating Southern Miss, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the Bayou Bluff Tennis Club in Gulfport, Miss. "This was a good weekend for us because we got in a lot of matches," Head Coach Randy Rowley. "Today match meant a lot to us, not only because it was Troy, but because it was an opportunity to play a nationally ranked team. I was really happy with the play of Brittany Serret today. She came out and performed well. She had a great day." Troy opened the match winning the doubles' point. Annabelle Bares and Rawia Elsisi (Troy) knocked off Sherry Price and Brittany Serret, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Claudia Strauss and Stephanie Vieira (Troy) outlasted Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman, 8-5, earning the point for the Trojans at No. 2 doubles. Ali Blackett and Grace Kammerer were leading Carolina Jouanin and Nicole Shaw at No. 3 doubles, 7-6, when the match was suspended. Troy (11-4) carried its momentum into singles' play. The Trojans pushed their lead to 2-0, following a win at No. 5 singles when Vieira downed Kammerer 7-5, 6-1. Strauss defeated Dellocono at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-4. Troy clinched the match with Gouveia downing Gutterman, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Southern Miss (14-2) returns to action on Wednesday, when the Lady Eagles host Southern University. Troy finished the tournament with a 3-0 record, followed by Southern Miss at 2-1, West Virginia was 1-2 and Long Island was 0-3. West Virginia defeated Long Island in the morning match, 7-0.
